Do dogs recognize themselves in the mirror?

Dogs surprised himself when he came across a full-length mirror and he started barking. Puppies are more likely to experience to get seeing their reflection in the mirror and acting like it is another dog, leading to barking and play bowing at their reflection.

Older dogs tend simply ignore their reflection like they cannot see themselves. Dogs are not able to recognize their reflection and do not have the same self-awareness as humans have.

Puppies are the only ones who seem to care about seeing themselves in a mirror. They don't recognize their reflection as an image of themselves. Bringing home, a young puppy, who happens to walk or run past a mirror, they may catch a short look at their reflection.

Many puppies will stop in front of the mirror and begin to bark, growl, show their teeth, angry growl, or even cry at their reflection. Seem like an odd reaction when seeing themselves, they don't recognize that reflection as an image of who they are.

The dog thinks there is another dog and will react as such. Some puppies will get a bit aggressive, while other puppies will take it as another puppy looking to play.

Instead of growling or barking, they play bow in front of their reflection, run back and forth in front of the mirror, bark in a playful tone, or try to play chase with the reflection.

You cannot train your dog to recognize their reflection in the mirror, you can do an at-home, dot test to see if your dog may recognize themselves in the mirror.

This is easy to recreate at home and you can do it with the materials you have laying around the house.

Once the dot is in place, put them in front of a mirror. You may have to hold them there for a bit or attract them to look in the direction of the mirror with a treat.

When they are in front of the mirror, try and see if they catch sight of the colored dot in the reflection. If they do catch sight of the dot, they will start pawing or scratching at the spot to touch it or get it off.

However, if they seem to not become aware of it, don't interested in the dot, or won't even look at their reflection in the mirror, it is likely because they don't recognize their reflection as themselves or your dog just simply does not have an interest in his/her reflection.
