Is it OK for a cat to lose a whisker?

Cats are born with their whiskers and hairs. These whiskers are an important part of a cat's body structure. It grows on their upper lips, chins, above their eyes, and on the back of the wrist on their forelimbs, known as carpel whiskers.

Cats are born with 24 whiskers, 2 sets of 12 whiskers arranged in four lines on each side of their face. Cats do shed their whiskers. Hairs are made up of a protein known as keratin.

Hairs are made up of a protein known as keratin. This is a skin protein that doesn't contain nerves. The hair roots at the base of the whiskers are full of nerve endings and blood vessels and content to hearing, seeing, smelling, etc. Neurons are nerve cells that transmit information to the brain.

Because of sudden stress, high fever, endocrine problems, and parasites like a skin infection reason, cats might experience whisker loss or breakage.

Whiskers help the cat to increase their senses and provide important information about their surrounding conditions. It is also helpful for those who have a short-distance vision.

The whiskers help them with their vision in low light and even help with hunting because the hairs allow them to sense even to alert them to predators.

Cat whiskers also prevent cats from getting stuck in small spaces. The hairs spread out as wide as their bodies, allowing cats to sense whether they fit into enclosed spaces.

Cats shed once when their inactivity period is over. Animal hair goes through three phases the growth phase, inactivity, and shedding phase. When the shedding phase comes, even vibrissae fall off.
