Is rice good for dogs?

Many pet owners feed rice to their dog when he is sick. Especially when the stomach is upset. The reason is white rice is the chosen grain for the dog with an upset stomach. It's easy to digest, quick to prepare and low in fiber.

Is all Rice the same:-
Brown rice is not good for dogs having an upset stomach and Intestine related issues, such as diarrhoea. Always white rice is preferable because it contains starch.

White rice has a higher glycemic index than brown and can cause blood sugar levels to rise. You can feed him a little white rice, if needed, but it should not be given to him regularly.

One-third cup of cooked brown rice contains about 80 calories compared to 70 calories for white rice.

Brown rice contains little more protein, carbohydrates and fiber. But both do contain any cholesterol, just a very little fat.

Brown rice can be harder for a dog to digest because it is not processed. Brown rice has a seed coat where the foods are stored. This coat is missing in white rice. That's why it contains less nutritional content.

Along with protein and fat, carbohydrates are an important part of a dog's diet. Too many carbs can lead to weight gain.

Commercially produced dog food contains more carbohydrates. So be careful and do not overload the dog's food with high carb foods like rice.

When you prepare rice for the pup. Just boil it in water and don't add any seasonings or spices. Keep it plain and simple.

How much rice should give to dogs?
If you are feeding rice, then you may give a quarter cup for a large dog and just a tablespoon or two for a smaller dog. You can also give non-spicy foods like fruit juice, cooked vegetables, plain chicken, etc.

For upset stomach, you can mix rice with a small amount of lean protein, like plain, shredded chicken breast.
